  • State police Thursday still were awaiting autopsy results regarding the human remains that were found behind a vacant home Wednesday.
The remains — which may be those of an elderly man who went missing from the area at least seven years ago — were found behind 59 Flint Ave. shortly after 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when the husband of the property owner was doing renovations, Little Falls police Chief Michael Masi said.
“Initially he just saw a piece of a bone,” Masi said.
Police “could tell that it appeared to be a human body in a significantly decayed state.”
Masi said he wasn’t aware of any current missing person cases in Little Falls.
While the Little Falls police chief did not want release the name or residence of the property owner, he said it had been acquired from their father, who passed away.
Herkimer County records show the current owner of the property is Tammy Lynn Sterling, who purchased 59 Flint Ave. in 2006 for $1. Sterling could not be reached.
Robert Shafer, who has lived at 71 Flint Ave. for about seven years, said he hadn’t seen anybody in the home for the last couple years. “I didn’t know anything was going on,” he said. “I don’t think anybody knows.”
Masi said people had been living in the home off and on.
“At various times people had been residing there short term,” he said. “Nothing consistent.”
“The owner and anybody who has stayed there is a subject of interest and is being, or will be, interviewed,” Masi added.
State police and Little Falls police are involved in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 366-6000.
Another Little Falls missing person case made headlines in 2003 when resident Jodi Marie Connor was reported missing Nov. 4, 2003. On Nov. 10, her body was found buried in the basement of her John Street home in Little Falls. Scott F. Barhydt was charged with second-degree murder soon after.
