  • Several weapons were removed from a home on Pine Avenue in Herkimer and a man was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation after a standoff Monday evening, according to Herkimer police.
Police were called to the home at about 3:45 p.m. by a family member to check on the welfare of a 21-year-old man, who was reportedly having emotional issues.
Police were told at that time there were weapons inside the residence.
When the man refused to come outside, police evacuated nearby residents and secured the area.
Police established communications with the man and spoke to him for several hours before he voluntarily surrendered at about 7:30 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said.
Officials said the suspect did not threaten to harm police or himself, but he was armed and refused to leave the home. His name is not being released in accordance with mental health law.
Police departments from Ilion, Mohawk, Little Falls and the village of Frankfort, as well as state police and Herkimer County Community College Campus Safety assisted at the scene, police said.
The Herkimer and Ilion fire departments also provided manpower and equipment.
Police blocked Maple Grove Avenue at the intersection with German Street, sending local traffic up Lou Ambers Drive, and emergency lights could be seen at other locations as well, including near the Herkimer County 911 Center and Campus Meadows at Herkimer County Community College.
According to reports, at least a half-dozen guns were removed from the residence.
No arrests have been made and the investigation was continuing.
