  • CENTER STATE CONFERENCE DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIP MEET
The final West Canada Valley athletes to compete Wednesday came through for the Indians who earned a first-place tie with Clinton at the Center State Conference’s Division I championship meet and, with that, claimed a league championship.
West Canada Valley went 10-0 in duals within the 11-team league, including a win against Clinton, the defending champion. The league championship is awarded on a point system combining dual meet wins and placement at the championship meet. Clinton was the runner-up in the final league standings.
The Indians and Warriors both finished with 104 points at Wednesday’s meet; Herkimer was third with 80.
Clinton led West Canada Valley by 14 points with only the 1,600-meter relay left to score on the track and the pole vault competition continuing in the field. The Indians won the four-by-400 with a lineup of Richy Wagner, Jack Minasi, Treyten Borden and Brandon Miner. Minasi dropped out of the 100-meter dash, one of his regular events, to run the relay for the first time this season and the Indians put up a time of 3:35.07.
Clinton’s relay team placed fourth, allowing West Canada Valley to shave six points from the Warriors’ lead while the pole vaulters whittled their competition down. Both Clinton vaulters went out at 10 feet, as did West Canada Valley’s Alex Kutsar, leaving the Indians with George Youngs and Brandon Azzarito. Azzarito cleared 11 feet, claiming fifth place and two points as four competitors, including Youngs, moved on. Youngs, Mohawk’s Rich Rinaldi and Adirondack’s James Koperda all cleared 11-6 and Youngs took third place — and its vital six points — on total attempts.
Only Little Falls Mountie Andrew Messina made it over the bar at 12 feet. The junior wound up winning the event with a top vault of 12-6.
Minasi won two of his three jumping events and was named the outstanding athlete for the field events. He went 22 feet, 1 inch in the long jump — no other competitor passed 20 feet — and 44-11 1/4 in the triple jump. Teammate Riley Synenki placed second in the triple jump and was the only contenstant within five feet of Minasi’s mark.
Minasi finished second in the high jump behind Herkimer Magicians Malik Briggs. The two state qualifiers had both cleared 6 feet, 6 inches at a dual meet in Newport last week — Briggs broke a school record while Minasi tied one he had already broken — and Briggs came out on top in the rematch, clearing 6-4 after Minasi went out with a top jump of 6-2.
Elsewhere in the field, Herkimer got a win from Austin Mills in the shot put and Little Falls’ Bruce Robinson won a discus  competition that saw him and two Ilion Golden Bombers — Travis Mead and Jon Hoover — all throw better than 140 feet. Terrence Oldfield, fourth in the discus, was the runner-up in the shot put, giving Herkimer a 1-2 finish.
Page 2 of 5 - Clinton’s Jordan Chrobak was named the outstanding athlete for the track events and posted wins in the 100- and 400-meter dashes. He finished second in the 200 behind Michael Johnson who broke an Ilion school record for the event. Johnson ran 23 seconds flat and finished in a virtual tie Chrobak during a dual meet in April; he ran 22.87 Wednesday and beat Chrobak by one 100th of a second.
Clinton’s Jack Yaworsky (1,600 meters, 3,200 meters) and Adirondack Wildcat Kyle Swiecki (110 hurdles, 400 hurdles) each won two individual events. Other winners included Holland Patent’s Barrett Celecki in the 800-meter run and Todd Stevens in the non-scoring steeplechase. Stevens and Celecki made up half of the winning four-by-800-meter relay team.
Herkimer won the four-by-100-meter relay with a team of Matt Borek, Brennan Thompson, Demetrius Brown and Zach Meszler.
