  • Entertainment takes center stage at Herkimer Co. fair

  • A day before the Herkimer County Fair wrapped up, Gerry Elthorp saw the bright side of things.
“The weather has certainly been on our side,” said Elthorp, director of the Herkimer County Fair, on Saturday. “Last year we had perfect weather for six straight days. So far, these five days have been beautiful weather.”
When asked what people seemed to enjoy the most about the fair this year, Elthorp’s answer was easy. “The entertainment,” she said.
There was certainly plenty of entertainment on Saturday, including the fair’s talent show. Eleven-year-old Trinity Critelli, of Frankfort, started off the show singing a Victoria Justice song.
“I just like to sing,” she said after her performance.
Others taking the stage were Sammy Dennis and Heather Jowett, both of Ilion, who sang the Carrie Underwood song “Jesus Take The Wheel” in unison and Emily Dygert, of Rome, who showed off her dancing skills.
“I admire anyone who comes here and do what they do best,” said John Burns, who emceed the show, and encouraged those in attendance to applaud the contestants for their talents.
Prizes in each division were $40 and a trophy for first; $20 and trophy for second and $10 and a trophy for third. Twenty-two competitors had signed up the show, but not everyone showed up.
Elthorp said the demolition derby drew a large crowd.
“It was standing room only,” she said, noting every ticket was sold out before the show started. Good crowds were expected for the truck pulls that were scheduled for later Saturday and on Sunday. Elthorp said that they decided to have two truck pulls instead of one because of their popularity.
Also drawing a large crowd was the Great Little Bear Show, where the trainer danced with bears and had them perform tricks.
The Herkimer County Fair draws about 60,000 people each year.
