    The 2013 edition of the Central New York Board No. 38 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials’ Zebra Classic tipped off Monday night. Teams made up primarily of Center State Conference stars play their first games Tuesday and the tournament for boys and girls wraps up Thursday at Onondaga Community College.

  • The 2013 edition of the Central New York Board No. 38 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials’ Zebra Classic tipped off Monday night. Teams made up primarily of Center State Conference stars play their first games Tuesday and the tournament for boys and girls wraps up Thursday at Onondaga Community College.
    Little Falls Mountie Gen Schoff and West Canada Valley Indian Alexis Fauvelle have been picked for the Fitness Forum squad in the four-team girls’ tournament. Coached by Waterville’s Larry Stockwell, the Fitness Forum team includes Center State Conference standouts Nicole Cring of Section III Class C champion Cooperstown, Christina Graziadei of Class D sectional champion Oriskany, Allyson Freiermuth of Holland Patent, Carly Dziekan of New York Mills, Elyssa Hapanowicz of Clinton and Shea Foster of Canastota. Filling out the roster are a pair of players from Whitesboro and Emily Durr from Notre Dame of Utica, the section’s Class B champion.
    Fitness Forum meets New York Air Brake in the second game of a doubleheader at Onondaga Community College Tuesday. New York Air Brake’s roster is made up of players from Section III’s north country and the Frontier League, including Kristin McGraw from Thousand Islands, the team Little Falls defeated in the Class C-1 semifinals.
    The other teams in the girls’ tournament are Lourdes Camp, representing the city of Syracuse, and IBEW Local No. 43, representing Syracuse and Onondaga High School League points south.
    On the boys’ side, Mohawk teammates Carson Murphy, Kainan McCarthy and Mike Santillo, fresh off winning a Section III championship as seniors in the school’s final pre-merger season, will suit up for Brooklyn Pickle  coached by Jeff Thrasher from the Utica City School District. Ilion’s Herschel Ivey is also on the team which includes Center State Conference standouts Will Thomas from Morrisville-Eaton, Nick Comenale from Class D sectional champion New York Mills and Mike Hayduk from Clinton.
    Brooklyn Pickle plays Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Nottingham High School against Nutzy’s Grill at the Westwood. The Nutzy’s Grill roster includes Syracuse players as well as those from the southern portion of the OHSL, among them Stewart Wright and J.J. O’Connor from Fabius-Pompey and Weedsport, respectively, two of the teams Mohawk beat in sectional play.
    The boys’ semifinals will be played Wednesday at Onondaga Community College with the championship doubleheader starting Thursday at 6 p.m. with the girls’ game.
