  • The Historic Herkimer County Courthouse bell rang Monday morning during a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the March 13 shootings in the villages of Herkimer and Mohawk and those who came to their aid.
Monday marked a countywide Day of Remembrance, a day designated by Herkimer County Legislature Chairman Vincent Bono to offer thoughts of healing, to remember the victims and their families and to express gratitude for the local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and emergency responders for their support.
“Remembering is a part of the healing process that helps people cope and Herkimer County is coming together to do just that,” said Herkimer County Sheriff Christopher Farber.
The historic county courthouse bell rang seven times for each of the victims and K-9 police officer Ape.
Farber said the ringing of the courthouse bell is a rare occurrence.
“The last time the bell was rung was in honor of the Sandy Hook victims,” he said.
“The thing about Herkimer County residents is that they are always willing to help and if someone is in need they will help in any way they can. Not only are residents remembering, but they are doing all they can by putting together benefits to help the victims and their families, one which was held this weekend,” he added.
What happened was a tragedy, but if it wasn’t for such great support things might not have been resolved as smoothly, the sheriff said.
“Herkimer County residents should be very happy with the local law enforcement as well as the support from outside agencies brought in to resolve the situation,” said Farber.
