  • The Herkimer Police Benevolent Association has started a memorial fund for all of the victims lost during last week’s tragedy in Herkimer County, including Ape, the K-9 officer that was shot and killed by Kurt Myers last Thursday.
PBA President Dan Palmisano said plans are in the early stages to erect a monument that will honor the victims and Ape in the village of Herkimer.
“The memorial will honor those that lost their lives for the future and not just the weeks surrounding the tragedy. We, as law enforcement, will never forget what happened and now Ape and the victims will be honored by area residents, families and visitors,” he said.
The type of monument and location still have to be decided, but as soon as the logistics are worked out Palmisano said a dedication ceremony date will be set.
Herkimer police said they are considering the library park or the village hall for possible locations for the monument.
Those interested in donating to the fund can send a donation to the Herkimer Police Department at 118 Green St., Herkimer, NY 13350 or drop it off at the front desk at the Herkimer Village Hall. For more information, visit the Herkimer police page on Facebook.
