The Herkimer County Community College Generals claimed third place at the NJCAA’s Division III championship tournament with Saturday’s 77-66 win over MassBay Community College at SUNY-Sullivan. The Generals had come within a last-second three-point shot of playing in the championship game.
New Jersey’s top-ranked Brookdale Community College (33-1), the team that defeated Herkimer 72-69 in Friday’s semifinals, claimed the championship by beating Eastfield College of Texas 61-55. Brookdale won its three tournament game by a combined total of 11 points.
Herkimer (32-4) trailed Massachusetts’ MassBay for the first half of the first half in the consolation game but came back to lead by eight points at halftime. The Generals started an 11-3 run nine minutes into the game and grabbed the lead; they never gave it back.
The hot-shooting of sophomores Dequan Jefferson and Demetrius Mitchell spurred Herkimer to Saturday’s victory. Mitchell attempted nine field goals — all three-pointers — and hit six on his way to scoring 19 points. Jefferson was even hotter, hitting six of his seven field goals attempts, including all three three-point tries, and shooting 12-for-15 at the foul line en route to a game-high 27 points. The Generals were 11-for-21 overall from behind the three-point arc and outscored MassBay (27-8) 20-12 from the foul line.
A three-pointer by Mitchell put Herkimer on top 16-15 with 7: 49 left in the first half and the Generals never trailed after that. Herkimer led 33-25 at halftime and led by as many as 13 points in the second half.
Jonathan Feiler had 18 points,m seven rebounds and two blocked shots for Herkimer and Jerome Floyd chipped in with seven points and seven assists.
Givaughn Jones led MassBay with 20 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Boris Fodouop added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Generals, national champions in 1991, last went to the national tournament in 2010 when they placed fourth at SUNY-Delhi; Joliet Junior College from Illinois defeated Herkimer in the quarterfinals and eventually won the championship.
