  • Donald (Donnie) Bellen, 72, of Center St., St. Johnsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 9, 2013, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, NY.

  • Donald (Donnie) Bellen, 72, of Center St., St. Johnsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 9, 2013, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, NY.
    He was born April 20, 1940, at the family homestead in Canajoharie, the son of the late Joseph and Bessie (Borden) Bellen. Donnie was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1958 where he was crowned king of his class.
    His marriage to Catherine Warner took place of December 6, 1964 at the St. Johnsville United Methodist Church.
    Mr. Bellen was a Vietnam Navy veteran, enlisting in 1958 and was honorably discharged on January 20, 1965 with the rank of Petty Officer.
    He was last employed at New York State Barge Canal.
    Donnie was a member of the St. Johnsville American Legion Post # 168, Sprout Brook Rod & Gun Club and was on the S.A.V.A.C board.
    With family as is foremost priority, Donnie proved himself a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed the sport of hunting. In his leisure he loved to cook and was an avid New York Yankee fan.
    Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Catherine; a daughter, Melissa Bellen Caponera and husband, Thomas; a son, Darren Bellen and Brenda Stowell; his grandchildren, Ashley Bellen, Tyler Bellen, Sophia Bellen and great-granddaughter, Hailee. He is also survived by his siblings, Anita Smith, Regina (Dory) Gee, twin sister, Diana (Grayson) Swartz; nieces and nephews, Douglas (Cyndi) Gee, Marsha McGowan, Gina Gee (Thomas) Scheck, Danny (Rene) Gee, Lynn Dockerty (Jeffrey) Crandall, John (Debbie) Dockerty, Jr., David (Debbie) Dockerty, Mark (Becky) Trombetta, Michael Trombetta, Matthew Swartz, Melanie Swartz, Janet Bellen, Patty Bellen (Mark) Leonhardt, Steven Bellen, Rick, Kevin and Jodi Warner, Angela Drews Owens, Hans Drews, Kate Miles Yoder, and many great nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. His in-laws were like his brothers and sisters. They include William (Mary) Warner, Rosaline (Hans) Drews, Evelyn (Wayne) Miles and John Dockerty, Sr.
    He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Bessie Bellen; stepmother, Rose Bellen; brother, Joseph Bellen; and a sister, Patricia Bellen Dockerty.
    Friends and relatives may call at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY, 518-568-7040, on Tuesday February 12, 2013 from 4-7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 13, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Johnsville United Methodist Church, Main Street, St. Johnsville, with Donnie’s brother-in-law, Revered Hans Drews officiating. Spring interment will take place at St. Johnsville Cemetery. A luncheon will follow after the funeral services at the St. Johnsville Community House on Washington Street in St. Johnsville. In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions in Donnie’s memory to the St. Johnsville United Methodist Church, 7 E. Main St., St. Johnsville, NY 13452. The family would like to thank Judy Kelly from St. Mary’s Health Center in St. Johnsville for the special care she gave Don over the years, and to Dr. Papandrea of Capitol Cardiology in Albany who had a 24 year relationship with Don and his family.
