  • Herkimer County Community College has been ranked the No. 1 Division III team by the National Junior College Athletic Association in its preseason poll which was released this week.
Herkimer coach P.J. Anadio and the Generals have only only two returning players from last year’s World Series team. Sophomores Stephanie Siriano, a Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School graduate, and Jessica Patterelli, a Canastota High School graduate, both were All-Americans as freshmen. The 2013 team includes 18 newcomers.
“We are coming off our first World Series appearance in over a decade after winning the Region III Championship and finishing 38-6,” Anadio said. “We had 18 players above a 3.0 GPA last semester.
“We’re very excited to be selected by the NJCAA’s voting committee as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation. Just to be included in the poll with some of the top programs and coaches in the game is very humbling.”
Anadio said the team will continue to work extremely hard to prove itself worthy of this accolade.
“A lot of hard work has been poured into the program in the past few years by a lot of people, especially our former players, and I couldn’t be happier for them,” Anadio said.  “Without the support from the entire HCCC campus community, we wouldn’t be in the position we are today.”
Herkimer opens its season March 12 at Orange County Community College. The Generals’ home opener is set for March 30 against Onondaga Community College.
