  • A Pennsylvania man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter following the death of a Sylvan Beach teen who was struck by his vehicle Wednesday, state police said.
Police say 13-year-old Neil Pederson, of Sylvan Beach, was riding his bicycle home from a friend's house at about 8:39 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a truck on Vienna Road. Pederson was thrown from his bike and landed on a walking trail as a result of the crash. He was later pronounced dead at Oneida City Hospital, police said.
The driver of the truck, who left the scene after striking Pederson, has been identified as 53-year-old Gary Svecz of Forest City, Pa., police said.
Svecz was pulled over by a volunteer firefighter a short distance from the crash, and was later charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular manslaughter, police said. He was arraigned in Floyd Town Court and sent to Oneida County jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond, police said. He's scheduled to appear in Floyd Town Court on June 4 for a felony hearing.
