Marcus Failing scored the final eight of his career-high 26 points in overtime Wednesday and the Fort Plain Hilltoppers pulled out a 73-70 win against Saratoga Catholic on an emotional night.
Failing’s fifth and sixth three-pointers of the game helped the Hilltoppers (9-6, 7-4 WAC North) break away from a 65-all regulation tie. The win pulled Fort Plain even with Saratoga Catholic (8-7, 7-4 WAC North) in the chase for the North Division’s second spot in the Western Athletic Conference’s WAC Cup playoffs.
The victory also came at the end of a day that included funeral services for 2009 Fort Plain graduate Bo Baker who was killed in a one-car crash Friday outside the city of Little Falls. It was also Senior Night for the Hilltoppers who were beaten 72-25 by the Saints earlier in the season.
Failing gave Fort Plain a 65-62 lead with a three-point shot and Saratoga Catholic called a timeout with 2.6 seconds left on the clock. The Saints inbounded the ball to halfcourt then passed to Ryan Czarnecki in the corner for a tying shot at the buzzer.
Zach Florian also set a career-high for the Hilltoppers with 18 points. Senior Chris Hanifin made his return to action from an injury and scored 12 points.
Keegan Murphy scored 16 points while Czarnecki and Michael Naughton each had 15 for the Hilltoppers.
Fort Plain plays at St. Johnsville Friday.
