The Herkimer Magicians took a brief lead in the second half at West Canada Valley Friday but the Indians came storming back and pulled away to win 71-53.
The Magicians (4-10, 3-4 CSC-II) were within four points at halftime and used a 9-0 run to take a 35-34 lead midway through the third quarter. Herkimer took the lead on three-point shot by Adrian Viscomi who scored the final seven points of the run after assisting on a basket by Malik Briggs.
West Canada Valley (11-4, 5-2 CSC-II) came back with 10 points in a row and outscored the Magicians 14-2 over the next three minutes.
Herkimer would get as close as three points in the fourth quarter but a pair of ill-timed fouls contributed to a 9-0 run for the Indians. Dan Graziadei was called for a charge and had a basket waved off with West Canada Valley leading 60-52. Coach Jim Babcock was assessed a technical foul on the next Herkimer possession as Briggs grabbed an offensive rebound.
“We put ourselves in a good spot,” Babcock said. “I’m very proud of how we played.”
Jordan Yaworski made one of the foul shots the Indians received then hit a three-pointer from the left corner for a 12-point lead.
The Indians outscored the Magicians 15-1 over the final 4 1/2 minutes to stretch a four-point lead to the final 18-point margin.
“I puts a little better taste in your mouth to finish that way,” West Canada Valley coach D.J. Shepardson said.
Ryan Grogan led the Indians with 16 points. Yaworski added 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Bobby Davenport scored 11 points while Jack Minasi had nine points and eight rebounds and Josh Sternberg had eight and eight.
Viscomi had 21 points, six rebounds and two steals for Herkimer. Graziadei added 11 points and eight rebounds while Joe McKinney had 11 points and four assists.
