  • Valley Health Services earned a top ranking in U.S. News and World Report’s annual Best Nursing Homes report released at the end of February.
Reflecting back on the achievement Thursday afternoon, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer Lisa Betrus said she sees nurses who have worked selflessly providing care and compassion to residents suffering from a recent catastrophic health crisis, housekeepers who work tirelessly to ensure residents’ rooms are clean and hygienic and dietary staff who strive to create the best meals possible for people on diet restrictions.
“I see a group of people dedicated to our mission and demonstrating that commitment every day,” said Betrus during a celebration recognizing the facility’s five-star rating from U.S. News and World Report. “The staff of Valley Health Services proves what few really know — when you really love what you do, you create something priceless and wonderful in your life and in the lives of those around you.”
There are 126 nursing homes in Central New York, five of which received an overall rating of five stars. This places Valley Health Services in the top four percent of Central New York nursing homes, the top 18 percent statewide and the top 19 percent nationally.
“I am humbled and proud to be a part of this extended family of caring and compassionate individuals who embrace each and every one of our residents and by doing so, have made Valley Health Services a special home,” said Betrus.
She added the 160-bed, long-term care and short-term rehabilitation facility earned the national recognition by doing what it does best — caring for people.
“Our staff is a rare and wonderful group who make our facility a loving home and commit to meeting the needs of those who live in our home 24-hours a day, 365 days a year,’ said Betrus. “This is why Valley Health Services is a five-star facility.”
“The recognition was presented to the facility, but the facility is just brick and mortar. It’s the people inside that make the difference,” said state Assemblyman Marc Butler, R - Newport. “The people here at Valley Health Services are what make the nursing home among the best not only in Central New York, but in the nation.”
“With this recognition the rest of the nation knows what we here in the Mohawk Valley and in Herkimer County know, the staff at Valley Health Services are compassionate and caring,” said state Senator James Seward, R – Oneonta. “This recognition speaks to the dedication and commitment the staff provide each and every day.”
U.S. News and World Report’s evaluation was based on data from Nursing Home Compare, a consumer website run by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The agency sets and enforces standards for facilities enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid that provide 24-hour nursing care and other medical services. Nursing homes earn an overall rating of one to five stars, as well as up to five stars in each of three categories — health inspections, nursing and physical therapy staff and quality of care.
Page 2 of 2 - In addition to celebrating Valley Health Services’ five-star rating, Thursday’s ceremony also celebrated Laura O’Donnell, former president of the facility’s board of directors.
“The success enjoyed by Valley Health Services is in direct correlation to the efforts of the many individuals who have supported its development since the beginning. Among these individuals is Laura O’Donnell, whose involvement is and has always been characterized by an impressive commitment,” said Betrus.
“This facility has skilled staff and good board members,” said O’Donnell. “All of the people here are dedicated to delivering the quality care people deserve.”
