  • The St. Johnsville Central School Board of Education has appointed a veteran administrator with long ties to the district as interim principal of the junior-senior high school, according to a news release.
The board appointed former assistant superintendent and elementary principal John Burkhart to replace Gregory Sova, who submitted his resignation last week to pursue other professional opportunities.
A 30-year veteran of the St. Johnsville school district, Burkhart began work in his new position Monday. His appointment runs until the end of the school year.
“While he will only be with us a short time, Mr. Burkhart’s extensive experience will be an asset to the school,” Superintendent Laura Lawrence said in the release. “I encourage parents and students to reach out to Mr. Burkhart for any assistance they may need.”
Burkhart taught history at St. Johnsville Junior-Senior High School for 16 years before he began his career in school administration. In 1984, he was appointed the district’s elementary principal. He served in that capacity until 1998. During his time as principal, he also served as the assistant superintendent of business and district clerk.
In 1998, Burkhart accepted the superintendent’s position at Andes Central School District in the Catskills. After his retirement from Andes in 2003, he became principal of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Oneonta.
“I’m happy to be of service to the district,” Burkhart said in the release. “For many years I served as the district testing coordinator, and parents and students can rest assured the final month of school will run smoothly.”
A native of Ilion, Burkhart has lived in the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville area since the early 1970s.
