  • Mr. Richard Stuart Washburn, 78, of Winterville, died Friday evening, May 17, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.

  • Mr. Richard Stuart Washburn, 78, of Winterville, died Friday evening, May 17, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.
    He was born in Herkimer County, N.Y., on October 17, 1934, to the late William and Inez Saltzman. He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Washburn, Jr., and Brian Washburn; a grandson, Kyle Murphy; a brother, Robert Washburn; and a sister, Norma McNamara.
    Richard served his country in the U.S. Navy for thirteen years and served during the Korean War. He then came to New Bern in 1971 as manager of S.E. Nichols until 1985. He then became the manager of Brendles until it closed in 1997.
    A funeral service will be held Tuesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home by Rev. E.T. Vinson. Burial will follow in Williford/Lee's Chapel Cemetery.
    He is survived by his wife, Lynette T. Washburn, of Winterville; a son, William Washburn and wife, Carol, of Little Falls, NY;  three daughters, Lynne Venters, of New Bern, Barbara Murphy and husband, James, of Windham, NH, and Virginia Shaver and husband, Thomas, of Little Falls, NY; three grandchildren, Lisa Ruhnow, and Meredith and Riley Murphy; five step-grandchildren, Deborah Edick, Tracy Crosier, Tom Shaver, Greg Shaver and Michelle Shaver; and four step great-grandchildren.
    The family will receive friends Tuesday (today) from 1 to 2 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.
    Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
