  • Fire destroys fire chief’s home in Stratford

  • Fire destroyed the home of the Stratford volunteer fire chief on Monday.

    Media outlets reported the home of Donald Vedder, at 183 Piseco Rd., caught fire some time Monday morning. A neighbor reported the fire at 11:30 a.m., after hearing a popping noise and smelled smoke. The fire was under control at 2 p.m.

    The home was considered a total loss.

    A cause had not yet been determined.
    Responding to the call were the Hilltop, Ephratah, Oppenheim, Rockwood-Garoga-Lassellville, St. Johnsville, Dolgeville and Salisbury fire departments.
    The American Red Cross also sent volunteers to help the Vedders.
    Stratford and Salisbury Ambulance also responded to the scene.
    The Dolgeville Volunteer Fire Department responded with a tanker, an equipment vehicle and manpower and assisted until they returned to service at 3:07 p.m.
