  • During an invocation at the second annual Rotary Club of Herkimer Roast, Ed View made mention of four Herkimer County village mayors.
“We’re not just going to honor them, we’re going to roast them,” he said, drawing laughs.
The event took place at Francesca’s Banquet Hall and Catering in Ilion on Thursday night.
The roastees were Frankfort Mayor Frank Moracco, Herkimer Mayor Mark Ainsworth, Ilion Mayor John Stephens and Mohawk Mayor Irene Sweet.
“If you can’t poke fun at yourself, who can you poke fun at,” said Sweet before the start of the event, who was roasted by friend and Mohawk Village Trustee George Cryer.
Stephens — roasted by friend Scott Hendrix — said he was looking forward to the event.
“It’s for a great cause,” said Stephens. “You got to understand, that most of the time we’re in the news for some adversity. But tonight is about fun, family and friends.”
When Hendrix got to the microphone, he talked about their friendship over the years.
“The hardest part was weeding out what I could say to a mixed crowd,” he said, also getting laughs.
Hendrix then listed the some of the amusing nicknames he’s known Stephens by over the years.
The event wasn’t all fun and games.
The Rotary also took time to recognize some of its own for their service to the organization.
Bill and Lucille Smith, of Ilion, were given an international world clock and a bouquet of flowers, respectively, for over 50 years of service to the organization.
Mindy Barstein, vice president of the Rotary Club, presented the Paul Harris Award to Maria Hunt, who was surprised to learn she was the recipient. Hunt, who came to the U.S. from Poland when she was 14-years-old, operates Maria’s Jewelry and Mohawk Medical Supply in Mohawk.
“If you’re not a Rotarian, you need to be a Rotarian,” said Hunt, while holding her granddaughter, Ayla Cassella.
The Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self” and has 1.2 million members throughout 34,000 clubs worldwide.
