3 Beards Beer Company of Northborough, Mass., wants to give those who don’t have a way to brew beer commercially a chance to have their beers brewed, bottled and sold in stores.
There are many talented assistant brewers and homebrewers throughout the country, but few of us get the chance to try their beers.
But now, 3 Beards Beer Company of Northborough, Mass., wants to give those who don’t have a way to brew beer commercially a chance to have their beers brewed, bottled and sold in stores.
Brandon Rougeau of Northborough and Abraham Sekler of New Jersey hope to use 3 Beards as a way to introduce new brewers to beer consumers.
"We’re calling them undiscovered artisans of ales," said Rougeau, 29. "There are people who are the second or third person in line at breweries or brewpubs, or big time homebrewers, and we’re working with them. We said there are people all over the country and all over the world who brew good beer, and we could work with them."
The goal is to have a different brewer develop a recipe for every 3 Beards beer, and then have a different brewery in Massachusetts brew it.
"We just want to celebrate those brewers and the local breweries," said Rougeau. "The craft beer industry is just a huge community. Everyone has been so helpful so far."
The first beer from 3 Beards has just been released. Lumberjack Black Lager is based on a recipe by homebrewer Virgil Drayer of Ohio. The beer was brewed at Paper City Brewing Company in Holyoke.
"We got a brewer from Ohio, and no one would have ever had a chance to try his stuff," said Rougeau. "We really liked him. We got a hold of a few of his samples. We said if you create a recipe, we’ll bring it to Massachusetts."
Rougeau said he hopes that showcasing unknown brewers may lead them to getting a paid gig brewing beer for a living. The brewers get the credit for the beer on the label, and make a little cash, he said.
The sales have been good in the first three weeks, Rougeau said.
"It’s a big gamble, but so far so good," he said. "We’re in over 50 stores. People have really dug it."
Rougeau said they are now working with two other brewers, also from Ohio, who are working together to create an IPA recipe. The beer will be brewed at the Opa Opa Brewing Company in Southampton, Mass., and they hope to have it available early in 2013, he said.
Rougeau said he is a homebrewer, but said he is not at the point where he feels like his beer should be brewed professionally.
"I’m far from calling myself a brewer or a brewmaster," he said. "There are guys out there who are so talented. I hope to release one of my beers someday."
Page 2 of 2 - For now, Rougeau said he hopes he and Sekler can make 3 Beards Beer Company successful enough to open their own brewery. He said it’s a unique way to run a beer company, but he said he thinks it can find success.
"The beautiful thing is, it’s beer, man," he said. "Some people are going to like it and some people aren’t."
