Melissa Stec’s goal late in the first half accounted for the only scoring Sunday afternoon as the Herkimer County Community College Generals defeated Clinton Community College 1-0 in their home opener at Wehrum Stadium.
Stec scored at 43:08 with an assist from St. Johnsville’s Jaylene Stowell. Stec knocked home a pass off the right wing from 15 yards out.
The Generals (2-0-1, 1-0-0 Region III) had controlled play for most of the first half and came up empty on a pair of earlier scoring chances. Clinton goalkeeper Emily Schultz made a key save on a shot by Jessica Williamson to keep the match scoreless before the Generals broke through.
Schultz made 10 saves for the Cougars who were outshot 12-3.
“We played really well,” Herkimer coach Amy Dommer said, “but there’s only so much you can do against a good goalie.”
Kristi Bills, a freshman from Northville, made three saves and earned her first college shutout for the Generals.
Herkimer, ranked 10th in Division III of the NJCAA, travels north Tuesday for a match at Jefferson Community College.
