Several area youths built and tested robots during the robotics mini-camp at Herkimer County Community College Wednesday morning.
The college offered the week-long summer program through a partnership with the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H program. Using Lego Mindstorms kits, the campers learned programming basics and practiced math and science skills while creating their robots.
“The kids learned to apply the STEM education — science, technology, engineering and math — into their everyday activities. They used circumference, measuring, angles, adjustments and problem solving all together to do something that’s fun,” said camp instructor Jordan Purinton.
“It’s beneficial. Being able to do (these calculations) in the classroom is one thing, but being able to apply them in real life is a whole different set of skills that they need to learn,” Purinton added.
