  • The South Washington Street bridge over the Erie Canal in Herkimer will be closed for three months as part of a construction project, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Starting Wednesday, July 25, drivers will be directed to State Route 28 and State Route 5 as part of a signed detour, a news release from the DOT stated.
The closure, about one mile east of the Route 5S and Route 28 intersection, is to allow for the rehabilitation of the bridge deck, the DOT release stated.
Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling through the work zone and to pay particular attention to all traffic control devices, the release from the DOT stated.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 30.
Steve Emrich, a DOT civil engineer, previously said the project will extend the service life of the bridge through replacement of the concrete surface and railing, and steel and sub-structure repairs.
Specifically, Emrich said the project will consist of hydro demolition and latex modified concrete overlay of the bridge deck wearing surface and replacement of the guide railing to meet standards.
“The total cost of the rehabilitation project will be less than $1 million, which is 17 percent less than the cost of a replacement project, which would cost an estimated $5.5 million,” he said.
A combination of federal and state funds will be used to pay for the $950,000 project, said Emrich.
The section of the Erie Canalway Trail near the State Route 922B bridge will remain open during construction. The canal will also remain open to traffic during construction.
The work will be done by Tioga Construction Company of Herkimer.
