  • The Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School District Board of Education on Tuesday appointed Brett W. Barr as the district’s new principal.
Barr’s appointment as the pre-kindergarten through grade 12 building principal will take effect on July 30.
“We’re excited to have Mr. Barr join our administrative team. His experience makes him a great fit for our district, and I look forward to working with him to provide a sound educational program for our students now and into the future,” Superintendent Dan Russom said in a news release.
There were 16 applicants for the building principal position, and school administrators interviewed five candidates before narrowing the field down to two finalists.
Finalists were introduced to the public during a community meeting late last month.
Barr is currently a case manager for the Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth. Before working at Berkshire, he taught business education at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School for 10 years and served as a basketball, baseball and assistant football coach, class advisor and lead teacher for the district’s elementary school. Barr has also served as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Cobleskill’s School of Business.
Barr replaces Theodore Kawryga, who has been serving as interim building principal since Christopher Fatta left the position to become elementary principal in the St. Johnsville Central School District.
