Concertgoers to this weekend’s moe.down will be able to help out a local school when they pass through the gates on Friday.
Evan Rosman, of Elmont, is once again organizing a drive for school supplies to benefit the students at Harry M. Fisher Elementary School in Mohawk.
“We did very well last year,” said Rosman during a telephone interview on Thursday. “We’re looking to surpass that this year.”
According to moe.’s website, the drop off location will be at check-in on Friday and will be marked by a pop-up tent with a “School Supply Drive” sign.
“This will alleviate the concertgoers from having to bring the supplies back to their campsite,” said Rosman.
Those unable to make donations on Friday can do so on Saturday and Sunday at the Kids Tent.
Rosman said he started doing the moe.down supply drives back in 2007, when he was collecting books for the local library. He said they received nine boxes of books the first year and 45 boxes of books the second year.
Rosman said it was after talking to moe.’s band manager Jon Topper that he was turned onto the idea to gather school supplies for local children instead, since there is a need for such supplies. Some of the items donated last year included backpacks, crayons, colored pencils, pens, pencils, erasers, folders, calculators, notebooks filler paper and scissors.
Rosman said he is optimistic about another successful drive, and that he and his girlfriend have already started collecting by purchasing sale items at OfficeMax and Staples. He also said they have also received help from the Elmont Memorial Public Library through a monetary donation and supplies left over from its summer reading program, which includes a variety of items such as book covers, door hangers and sticky pads.
moe.down XII will be held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Gelston Castle Estate, off of Robinson Road in Mohawk. Organizers expect 8,000 to 10,000 people to attend the event.
This year's lineup includes moe., The Levon Helm Band (plus Very Special Guest Bob Weir), Ween, TV On The Radio, Slightly Stoopid, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, Ozomatli, Railroad Earth, The New Mastersounds, Rubblebucket, Danger Muffin, The Ragbirds, Empire Sound, Band, and Gary Clark, Jr. For details about each artist, http://www.moedown.com.
This is the second year moe. has held their annual Labor Day weekend festival in Mohawk, after spending 10 years in Turin. Promoters have said the three-day event is known for its “laid back vibe and great music, as well as its intimate and scenic setting.”
“We’re more than ready,” said Jeff Tew, property manager of Gelston Castle Estates, about this weekend’s events. “Our vendors are setting up. The stage is set up and it looks ready to go.”

The Kids Tent will be open from 12 to 4 p.m. each day and will include a daily parade where the children can wear their own costumes.
Besides the supply drive, a moe.down Charity Golf Outing is scheduled for today at Pine Hills Golf Course in Frankfort. Money raised from the event will go to the Gram Lorraine Project, which provides holiday gifts for needy children in the area.
