  • The deadline for submissions for the Times Pet Calendar Contest is Oct. 31.
“People get really excited about the contest. We don’t want anyone to miss the chance to submit a photo of their pet,” said Telegram and Times Publisher Beth Brewer.
The lucky bird, cat, dog, etc. chosen as the winner of the sixth annual contest will receive the title of Pet of the Year, and will be joined by the other 11 top finishers in the 2013 Times Pet Calendar.
“The response has been great so far. We’re asking folks to send us their favorite pet photo before the deadline at the end of this month,” said Brewer.
The 2012 Times Pet Calendar Contest winner was Hercules, a cross of a Maltese and a Yorkie Terrier. The dog is owned by Leslie Zuccaro, of Little Falls, who said she and her husband, Henry, were encouraged to enter Hercules in the contest by friends and family.
Photos need to be submitted by Wednesday, Oct. 31, to The Times by mail at P.O. Box 551, Herkimer, NY 13350. Entrants may also drop their photo off at the office at 111 Green St., Herkimer.
The photo must be a sharply contrasted photo that will reproduce well.
A self-addressed stamped envelope needs to be included if entrants want their photo returned. Entrants are asked to include the pet’s name, the owner’s name, an address and a telephone number on the back of the photo, along with a description of the pet’s breed, etc.
Members of the Times staff will pick the 25 finalists. Voting will run until Nov. 30. Each vote will cost a dime. Ballots will be found in the print edition of the paper along with photos of the finalists.
Proceeds will go towards Newspapers in Education. The pet calendar contest serves as one of the largest fundraisers for the Times’ NIE program, which provides newspapers to schools.
“Newspapers in Education provides a living textbook and learning tool for students,” said Brewer.
