Joe Michaud pitched six scoreless innings Friday and hot-hitting right fielder Chris Cruz drove in three runs as the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs defeated the Oneonta Outlaws 8-2 for their third consecutive victory.
The DiamondDawgs own the longest active win streak in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League after Amsterdam’s 10-game run ended with an 8-6 loss at home to Glens Falls Friday. Mohawk Valley had not won back-to-back games during a 3-7 start to the season and the franchise’s last streak of this length was four in a row July 23-27, 2011.
Single runs in the third and fifth innings gave the DiamondDawgs their initial lead at Damaschke Field and three in the sixth gave the visitors a commanding 5-0 lead. The first run came when Oneonta starter Nathaniel Abel walked Eric Helmrich with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning. In the fifth, Joe Carcone reached base on an error and scored when Cruz tripled with two outs.
The Outlaws committed three of their five errors in the sixth inning and the DiamondDawgs took advantage. Jack Morrow reached base on an error and scored on a hit by Jesse Buratt who advanced on an error on the ball he hit. The Outlaws erred again on a ball hit by Luke Nethaway and Buratt scored to make the score 4-0. Relief pitcher Ben Mordini hit Mark Stuckey with a pitch then walked Carcone and Cruz to push another run across the plate.
Cruz picked up another RBI in the eighth inning and Stuckey drove in a run with a triple in the top of the ninth.
Bryant University’s Michaud truck out seven batters, walked two and allowed five hits as he won for the second time in three decisions. Taylor Wright struck out three batters over three innings of relief and allowed two hits and two unearned runs.
Stuckey had two hits for the DiamondDawgs and Connor Jones had two for Oneonta.
Cruz went 3-for-4 with a walk and raised his team-leading average to .389, third in the league. Marist College’s Helmrich and Cornell University’s Cruz are second and tied for third, respectively, among the league leaders in runs batted in. The bases-loaded walk gave Helmrich 13, one behind leader Sean Osterman of the Newark Pilots. Cruz has driven in eight runs during the DiamondDawgs’ win streak and has 12 on the season.
