Mohawk Fire Chief Randy Hunt said someone was working on a vehicle inside a garage at 373 Pine Bush Rd. when he heard “a big bang.” Hunt said that is when the individual noticed the car was on fire. Hunt said there were flames coming from the car when firefighters arrived at the scene.
“The building was filled with black smoke,” said Hunt, noting there was no fire damage inside.
There was some damage to posters and a work bench inside the garage, he said.
Hunt said the source of the explosion was the carburetor.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, the chief said. No injuries were reported.
The East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene. The Frankfort and Cedarville fire departments were also en route to the scene when they were called off.
