  • Herkimer police arrested a St. Johnsville man on drunken driving and several traffic charges after an accident in Herkimer on Saturday at 6:45 p.m.
William E. Windecker, 24, was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.08 percent. He was also charged with reckless driving, two counts of failure to signal turns, failure to yield right of way, failure to use the designated lane, operating a motor vehicle at a speed not reasonable and prudent, unsafe passing, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
Windecker was observed by off-duty Herkimer Police Officer Matthew Wright operating a motor vehicle erratically on East State Street. The vehicle passed traffic in a no passing zone and was operating at an unreasonable speed, police said. The vehicle then turned left onto Protection Avenue without yielding to an oncoming motorcycle driven by Robert Whittaker, 50, of Ilion, which was eastbound on East State Street, police said. The two vehicles collided at the intersection.
Windecker then continued down Protection Avenue without concern for the injured motorcyclist, police said. Wright then followed the fleeing driver while calling for police and emergency responders for the downed rider. Wright followed the driver to a residence on King Street, where he had hidden his vehicle on the lawn behind a residence. Wright then took the driver into custody after a brief struggle.
Windecker was arraigned and sent to Herkimer County jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail and $7,500 bail bond.
Whittaker was treated by Herkimer firefighters for minor injuries.
