  • Three soldiers in the Afghanistan war and four in the Iraq war have been awarded the highest honor of all after sacrificing their lives: the Medal of Honor. (Three others from the Iraq war have received the Medal of Honor but were not killed in action.) Today we take a moment to remember them:
    - Robert James Miller (Afghanistan): Fatally shot while diverting gunfire from Taliban forces so that his fellow soldiers could escape.
    - Jared C. Monti (Afghanistan): Killed while trying to rescue a wounded soldier from intense small-arms and rocket-propelled-grenade fire.
    - Michael P. Murphy (Afghanistan): Led a four-man reconnaissance team in a fight against superior numbers, exposed himself to hostile fire in order to call for help.
    - Jason Dunham (Iraq): Fought hand-to-hand with the enemy and hurled himself on a grenade to protect fellow Marines.
    - Ross A. McGinnis (Iraq): Saved the lives of four soldiers by diving on a grenade while inside a Humvee.
    - Michael A. Monsoor (Iraq): Saved the lives of his fellow SEALs at his sniper position by diving on a grenade.
    - Paul R. Smith (Iraq): Held the enemy at bay, allowing for the wounded to be carried out, died in the process.
Happening today: Today is Memorial Day, a day designated as a time to remember the sacrifices of those who have died to protect our country. A national moment of remembrance will take place at 3 p.m. local time.
