  • Wrecked cars, fake blood and student actors came together on a drizzly Tuesday morning at West Canada Valley Central School as part of a mock DWI car accident organized by the Students Against Drunk Driving chapters in Poland and West Canada Valley schools.
Firefighters with the Middleville Fire Department, Poland Volunteer Fire Co. and Newport Fire Department gave high school students a first-hand demonstration on how victims of auto accidents are treated for their injuries and extricated from crumpled cars using hydraulic rescue tools.
It also was explained to students watching the demonstration that the drivers would face driving while intoxicated charges if it were a real-life scenario.
“We did this to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving, and to make it real for them because they actually see it, ” said Patricia Lang, SADD adviser at West Canada Valley.
