The Herkimer County Community College Generals are heading to the NJCAA's Division III softball World Series as Region III-A champions after winning the first two games of their best-of-three series against Corning Community College Friday.
The Generals (36-4) won 19-0 in the first of four games played at Tompkins Cortland Community College Friday. After Tompkins Cortland defeated Monroe Community College in the first game of its series, Herkimer returned to the field and defeated Corning again, 9-3.
Krista Oakes and Mollee Putnam combined on a three-hit shutout in Herkimer's first game which was stopped after five innings by the NJCAA mercy rule. The Generals scored seven runs in the first inning and eight in the second. Stephenie Siriano went 3-for-3 with four runs scored, three runs batted in and her 17th home run of the season. Andrea Rogers went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in, three runs scored and a home run of her own. Leadoff hitter Jessica Dutka was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and Little Falls' Olivia Tooley went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.
The Generals scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure their win in Game 2. Dutka, Shannon McBride, Cheyenne Bumpus and Abby Black each had two runs batted in and Oakes pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts.
Herkimer, ranked sixth in the nation, heads to Rochester, Minn., for the national tournament beginning Thursday.
