    Houston had been a driving force behind the production of “Sparkle” since she had acquired the remake rights in 2000. Aliyah was originally who Houston had in mind to play the role of Sparkle, but plans were put on the back table after the singer was killed in a 2001 plane crash.

    New movies: 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green'
    The new movies out this weekend include "Sparkle," (PG-13) about three sisters from a successful singing group, starring the late Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks. "ParaNorman" (PG) is an animated comedy about a kid, Norman, who must save his town from a century-old curse. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" (PG) is a family-friendly flick about a boy who mysteriously shows up at the doorstep of a couple looking to start a family.
