  • Myrtis A. Backell, 69, of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Friday June 21, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, NY with her loving family by her side.

  • Myrtis A. Backell, 69, of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Friday June 21, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, NY with her loving family by her side.
    She was born November 18, 1943 in Utica, NY, the daughter of James and Beatrice (Parkhurst) Chrisman and was a graduate of Poland High School. Myrtis also attended Utica School of Commerce.
    She was united in marriage to Earl C. Backell, Sr., on January 24, 1961 in Herkimer.
    She was last employed at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, for Drs. Vecchio, Sperling and Smith, in Mohawk, NY, retiring in 2012.
    Myrtis’ life revolved around her family, with the happiest times being in the company of her loved ones, especially her loving grandchildren.
    Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Earl; two daughters, Mary Snyder and husband Paul, of Thatcher, Arizona, and Penny Farquhar, of Herkimer, three sons, Earl c. Backell, Jr., and Diana Mcdonald, of Volney, NY, James F. Backell and Kelly Mosher, of Herkimer, and William M. Backell, of Herkimer; a step-daughter, Christina Willow and husband Leon, of Corning, NY; two brothers, Donald (Red) Chrisman, of Herkimer, and Kenneth Chrisman, of Arizona; a sister, Betty Sears and husband Edward, of Mohawk; her loving grandchildren, Jason Backell, Joshua Backell, Victoria Becker and friend Liz, Nicholas Iamele, Brooke Iamele, Hunter Iamele, Jessica Main and husband, Joe, Billy Backell, II, Zachary Backell and Ashlyn Mahoney, Mackenzie Backell and Nicole Weller, Jacob Backell – Lucas, Brandon (Biebz) Backell, Ryan (Reggie) Holt, Cassidy Farquhar, Madison Grems, Gabriella Grems, Nora Swick, and William Moon; four great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    She was pre-deceased by a sister, Lena Lutz and a brother, James Chrisman, Jr.
    Arrangements have been entrusted to the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, 329 South Washington St., Herkimer, NY 866-1500. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday June 26, 2013 at 10:00 am from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi and Burns Funeral Home, 329 South Washington St., Herkimer, NY with Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director of Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls, NY. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Tuesday June 25, 2013 from 5-8 pm.
