  • The Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District Board of Education appointed several individuals to positions in the merged district, including a building principal.
The board appointed Brett Barr, the current Oppenheim-Ephratah pre-kindergarten through grade 12 building principal, as principal of the OESJ Oppenheim campus.
Next year, the Oppenheim building will house one of the district’s two elementary schools in addition to the OESJ districtwide middle school.
Barr has been the Oppenheim-Ephratah principal since July 2012. Before coming to Oppenheim-Ephratah he was a case manager for the Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth and was a teacher for 10 years at Cobleskill-Richmondville.
“Mr. Barr has proven himself a capable administrator during a period of great change,” said Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Michel, who has been guiding the district through the merger process. “He’s already contributed greatly to the creation of the merged district and I’m certain he’ll continue to contribute to the future success of OESJ.”
Barr was granted tenure earlier this year by the Oppenheim-Ephratah Board of Education. As a tenured administrator, Barr is entitled by state regulations to a position in the new district.
The district has advertised to fill its two other principal posts — the OESJ High School principal position and the principal position at D.H. Robbins Elementary School in St. Johnsville. Those positions are both currently filled by interim administrators.
In other personnel actions, the board appointed Anna O’Connell as the district clerk, and Daniel Parker was appointed the superintendent of buildings and grounds, pending a civil service examination.
An update regarding the superintendent’s contract was also given.
On May 8, the OESJ Board of Education announced it had selected current St. Johnsville Superintendent Laura Lawrence as its choice to be the first superintendent of the new merged district, and that she would be formally appointed to the position pending contract negotiations.
Contract negotiations are currently under way.
“The negotiation of a contract, be it with a superintendent or a union, takes time,” Michel said. “The board appreciates the public’s desire to see the matter settled and I expect the contract to be finalized in the near future.”
While the contract is being negotiated, Michel is the district’s interim superintendent. By state regulations the BOCES district superintendent serves as superintendent in any district in which there is a vacancy.
