After having the winning run thrown out at the plate in three consecutive innings Monday, the Little Falls Mounties finally scored on a bases-loaded single by Nick Luppino and defeated West Canada Valley 4-3 in nine innings to complete Center State Conference Division II play.
The Mounties had already clinched the league title and Monday’s win gave them a 9-1 finish in Division II. Single runs in the first three innings had given Little Falls a 3-0 lead but West Canada Valley came back to tie the score and the game went to extra innings after Mountie Michael Luppino was thrown out trying to score on an overthrow with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Little Falls got Mitchell Baumeister to third base with one out in the eighth and had home tagged out in a rundown between third and home.
The ninth inning started with Sean Ward drawing a walk from Alex Williams who pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters for the Indians. Lucas Godlewski followed with an infield hit and the Mounties loaded the bases when West Canada Valley failed to get an out on Jon Willman’s sacrifice attempt. A pop-up produced the first out of the inning and first baseman Mike Sternberg forced Ward out on Baumeister’s ground ball. Nick Luppino then lined a 2-2 pitch from Williams into center field for his game-winning hit, sending Godlewski home with the deciding run.
Little Falls scored single runs in the first three innings. Tyler Baumeister drove Luppino home with a double in the first inning, Godlewski tripled and scored on a Jason Vespi single in the second and Mitchell Baumeister scored on a throwing error in the third.
West Canada Valley loaded the bases with one out in the third inning but Tyler Baumeister escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts. Cole Smith knocked in two runs with a single in the fourth inning for the Indians and Brandon Roberts scored the tying run when Sternberg grounded out in the fifth.
Tyler Baumeister struck out 11 batters, walked none and hit two through seven innings. Mitchell Baumeister earned the win in relief, striking out four of the six batters he faced in two innings
