The Herkimer County Community College Generals ended a perfect final weekend of the regular season as Mountain Valley Conference champions assured of the top seed for the Region III playoffs.
Making up a pair of doubleheaders that had been postponed in April, the Generals followed Saturday’s weep of Clinton Community College with a pair of wins over Schenectady County Community College Sunday. The Generals defeated Schenectady, with which they had split two games April 23, 7-2 and 8-4.
The Generals (25-12, 24-4 Region III) are league champions for the fifth time in nine years. They have a 22-2 record within the Mountain Valley Conference.
Michael DeCarlo pitched a complete game for the win in Sunday’s opener, striking out four batters and allowing two earned runs on seven hits.
Doubles by Ryan Watson and Chris Burns gave Herkimer a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Schenectady took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth but Herkimer came back with Brent Baker’s two-run single in the bottom of the inning and went ahead for good. Dan Smith doubled home two runs in the three-run fifth inning and the Generals added a run in the sixth.
Ryan Watson went 4-for-4 in Game 1. Brandon Overstreet and Smith each had two hits.
Smith hit another two-run double in the first inning of the second game and Herkimer knocked Schenectady’s starter out of the game with six runs in one-third of an inning. Freshman Andy Stuart retired leadoff batter A.J. Fabrizio and did not record another out before he was relieved.
Watson, Overstreet and Burns all singled in the first inning and Cody Newbigging reached base on an error ahead of Smith’s double. Baker drove in two runs with a single and another scored on a passed ball.
Watson pitched five inning for his third win without a loss. He also had two hits and raised his batting average to .450.
Overstreet had three hits in the second game and is now batting .426.
The Generals finish the regular season Tuesday with a trip to East Field in Glens Falls, former home of the NJCAA’s Division III World Series, for a doubleheader against SUNY-Adirondack. Herkimer already beat Adirondack twice at home April 14. The Generals will be home again Saturday for the first two games of a best-of-three sub-regional series against a Western Division opponent to be determined.
Herkimer has won five of its six completed northern series and split with Jefferson Community College. The Generals have already clinched a split with Adirondack and won both games it placed against Columbia-Greene Community College.
