The Herkimer County Community College Generals will play for the NJCAA’s Region III-A championship after sweeping their best-of-three semifinals series against Columbia-Greene Community College.
The Generals defeated the Twins 8-0 and 10-2 in a pair of mercy rule-shortened games at home Saturday. They will travel to Dryden Friday to play for a second consecutive World Series trip against Tompkins Cortland Community College. Tompkins Cortland, he fifth seed and a 2-0 winner in its series against No. 4 Onondaga Community College, will be playing on its home field when the championship series gets started Friday at 10 a.m.
Toni Secreti helped Herkimer (37-2) jump ahead in its series by pitching her second no-hitter of the season in Game 1. She struck out three batters and walked none; Columbia-Greene had one batter reach base on an error.
The Generals wasted no time getting Secreti a lead. Playing as the away team on their home field, they got a double from Jessica Patterelli to start the game and Stephanie Siriano delivered the first run with a sacrifice fly. Four more runs would cross the plate in the opening frame, one on a single by Delaney Buckley and three more on consecutive doubles hit by Tina Karaqi, Ashley Sterritt and Alyssa Balfe.
Karaqi was 3-for-3 in Game 1 and Sterritt went had two doubles and two runs batted in. Balfe drove in two runs with two hits and Buckley also had two hits.
Secreti’s shutout was the ninth thrown this spring by Herkimer pitching.
Patterelli toed the rubber for Game 2 and followed Secreti with a four-hitter, shutting the Twins out until the fourth inning by which time Herkimer led 9-0. Courtney Gumprecht went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Patterelli also drove in three runs with her two hits while Buckley Karaqi and Fallon Spriggs each had two hits.
Tompkins Cortland defeated Onondaga 9-0 in Saturday’s first game then won the second 8-7 in nine innings. The generals won 20-1 and 13-2 at Tompkins Cortland when the teams met April 22.
The Region III-B championship series pits No. 6 Mohawk Valley Community College, an upset winner against Broome Community College, against No. 2 Monroe Community College.
