  • BO BAKER BASEBALL CLASSIC
The Fort Plain Hilltoppers paid tribute to a fallen friend Saturday morning then watched Haldane win the championship at the newly-named Bo Baker Baseball Classic.
The Hilltoppers, fresh off Friday’s Western Athletic Conference win against Saratoga Catholic, were upset in the first round of the tournament, losing 7-6 when Dolgeville scored five runs in the seventh inning. Haldane defeated Hoosick Falls in the second game of the day and beat Dolgeville 13-1 in the title game.
Kaelan Hitt started and won both games for Haldane, combining with Brando Hodges on a one-hitter in a 7-1 win over Hoosick Falls in the first round.
The day got off to an emotional start at the top of the hill with a ceremony to retire the No. 19 worn by former Hilltoppers catcher Bo Baker, a 2009 Fort Plain graduate who was killed in a single-vehicle accident Jan. 25 on Route between Little Falls and Herkimer. A sign displaying Baker’s name and number was unveiled beyond the home bullpen in left field next to the baseball program’s other  retired number, Rich Bower’s 10. Baker’s parents, Kenny and Theresa, and brothers Brent and Dustin were presented with a framed maroon No. 19 jersey and a helmet during the ceremony on the mound and Bo’s brothers threw out the tournament’s first pitches.
Coming off an exciting win over Saratoga Catholic Friday in Troy, the Hilltoppers immediately fell behind against Dolgeville. An error and a misplay in the top of the first inning led to two Dolgeville runs, one scoring on a hit by Kasey Foster and another on a ground out by Darrin Darling.
Fort Plain pounced on Dolgeville in the second inning and scored four times, taking advantage of two errors by the Blue Devils. The Hilltoppers scored another run on an error in the third inning and pinch-hitter Eric Orologio singled home a run in the sixth.
The Hilltoppers took the field leading 6-2 in the top of the seventh when Dolgeville made an improbable rally. An infield hit, a walk and a bloop single loaded the bases. Johann Doerrer’s infield hit brought home a run and put the tying run on base.
Jesse Heroth struck Dakota Walrath out for the first out of the inning before Josh Gross lined a pitch over the left fielder’s head for a bases-clearing and game-tying three-run double. Gross moved to third base on a ground out and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out error.
Doerrer relieved Darling to start the bottom of the seventh and retired the first two Fort Plain batters. Joe Ray walked on four pitches, stole second base and took third on an overthrow as the potential tying run. Ray was stranded at third base when Chris Hanifin flew out to left field to end the game.
Page 2 of 2 - Darling and Doerrer each had three of Dolgeville’s 10 hits while Danny Fox had a pair. Darling did not walk a batter through six innings.
Zach Sweet was 3-for-3 for Fort Plain and Trenton Douglas had two hits.
Hoosick Falls defeated Fort Plain 13-1 in the consolation game. The consolation and championship games were stopped after five innings.
Sweet doubled and scored twice in the consolation game.
Fox had a double and scored a run on a hit by Reid Johnson in the championship game.
