    The Herkimer County Community College Generals won once and lost once Thursday on the first day of play at the NJCAA’s double-elimination Division III national championship tournament.
    The Generals, seeded fifth among eight teams, defeated the College of DuPage 3-2 in their opening game before suffering a 5-3 setback against No. 1 Gloucester Community College.
    Cheyenne Bumpus, Shannon McBride and Jessica Patterelli each drove in a run  in the first game and Krista Oakes earned the victory inside the circle.
    Herkimer fell behind 4-0 against Gloucester, a 5-0 winner earlier in the day against Dutchess Community College. The Generals rallied to get back within two runs and had the tying runs on base when the game ended.
    Gloucester meets second seed Tompkins Cortland Community College in the winners bracket semifinal Friday.
    Herkimer plays at 11 a.m. Friday against Anne Arundel Community College. The winner advances to meet either Ridgewater College or DuPage later in the day; the loser plays in the fifth-place game at 1 p.m.
