The Herkimer County Community College Generals squeezed out a narrow win against Jefferson Community College at Wehrum Stadium Saturday. They could not do the same Sunday against New Jersey’s Union County College.
Saturday’s hard-fought 12-9 Region III win was followed by a disappointing 9-8 defeat.
Seeking their fifth win in six games, the Generals (4-4) led Union 7-6 at the start of the fourth quarter. Darien Millard tied the game three minutes into the final period and the visiting Owls (4-8) took a lead on Nate Hill’s goal six minutes later. The Generals would tie the game at 8 on a Kamm David goal with 2:33 left in regulation; Ryan Revette took the ball away as Union tried to clear its defensive zone and quickly sent a pass back in for David to the right of the crease.
The teams were tied in the final minute and Union, loser of four consecutive games in which it had allowed at least 20 goals, called a timeout after gaining possession with 38 seconds on the clock. Justin Wolfson bounced a shot inside the left post for what proved to be the winning goal with 24.9 seconds left to play; Hill assisted.
Pete Duggan won the final faceoff for the Generals and Herkimer had a chance to tie the game with one last possession. An errant pass missed its target and Union gained possession when the ball went out of bounds.
Jace Sowden, Davey Mitchell and David each scored two goals in the loss. Berek Martichuski added a goal and two assists and Nick Suits had one of each.
Hill had four goals and an assist for the Owls. Wolfson and Millard scored two goals each.
Herkimer had broken away from a 7-7 tie in the second half to beat Jefferson Saturday. The Cannoneers (1-7) pulled within one goal for the last time at 9-8 but Herkimer scored the next two to open the first three-goal lead of the contest.
Suits and Sowden each had three goals and an assist against Jefferson while David and Revette both had two goals and Martichuski had a goal with two assists and Mitchell had one and one.
Kyle Scordo and Dave Damon recorded hat tricks for Jefferson; Scordo added an assist with his three goals.
The Generals travel to Troy Wednesday to take on Hudson Valley Community College. They play at home Friday against Finger Lakes Community College.
