  • The search for a Herkimer Central School District superintendent is on again after being delayed by the valley school merger vote.
The district is in the unique situation of having to find two superintendents — an interim chief and the permanent administrator.
“We’re trying to hurry up and get a new interim in place as soon as possible,” said John Cipriano, board of education president.
The board is conducting interviews and plans to appoint an interim superintendent at its meeting Wednesday, Dec. 12.
The interim is expected to begin Jan. 1, 2013, and a permanent superintendent is expected by May.
Interim Superintendent Gary Tutty was hired last year after the retirement of Carol Zygo. Tutty originally was not slated to work this school year, but agreed to stay on to help the district through the process of merging the Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk school districts, said Mark Vivacqua, Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES district superintendent and search consultant.
The merger was voted down in October.
Tutty is retiring at the end of December.
In the meantime, the search for a permanent superintendent continues and has been accelerated, Vivacqua said.
The board decided to do an online community survey to help expedite the process rather than having community meetings.
It will help assist the board in developing questions for the candidate and gauging what the community is looking for in the next superintendent, Vivacqua said.
The survey is available at www.surveymonkey.com/s/HerkimerSearchSurvey and must be completed by Friday, Dec. 21.
The position and application are posted on the school district website www.herkimercsd.org.
Applications for the permanent superintendent position close Jan. 7, 2013.
The board expects to have finalists in place by mid-February to meet with community members and parents, Vivacqua said.
District residents will be invited to serve on a committee to help interview the finalists for the position.
