Joe Michaud threw seven scoreless innings at the Duffy Fairgrounds Sunday evening and the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs battered Watertown pitching in a 15-1 win over the Wizards.
Winners of three consecutive games for the second time this season, the DiamondDawgs rapped 15 hits, reaching double digits in the fourth straight game and sixth out of seven. They scored eight runs in the first three innings which was more than enough to support Michaud. Pitching on eight days of rest after setting a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League record with 15 strikeouts against Glens Falls June 29, Michaud allowed two hits and struck out eight batters while walking none.
Mohawk Valley took advantage of a dropped third strike, two walks, a wild pitch and another passed ball to score two unearned runs without a hit in the first inning. The bottom of the lineup got the bats going in the second when the DiamondDawgs scored five runs on five hits: Herkimer County Community College infielder Tyler Hall had a two-run double, Chris Cruz drove in a run with a single and two runs came home on a two-out error.
Hall, Jesse Buratt, Luke Nethaway and Hassan Evans, the last four hitters in the Mohawk Valley lineup, each had two hits. Evans scored four runs and pitched the final two innings in relief of Michaud. Hall scored twice. Leadoff hitter Tyler Heck went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Cruz scored three runs as the designated hitter before he was replaced with a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth; Eric Helmrich hit a three-run home run, his fifth of the season, to complete the DiamondDawgs’ scoring.
Michaud (4-1) has not allowed an earned run in his last 27 1/3 innings while winning four consecutive starts. The Bryant University right-hander shares the PGCBL lead with 46 strikeouts and ranks second with a 0.90 ERA.
The DiamondDawgs visited Elmira Monday and play at home Tuesday against Newark.
