Down by five entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mohawk Mohicans got the tying run to the plate but left the bases loaded and ended their season with a 7-3 loss to Waterville in the first round of Section III’s Class C-2 playoffs.
Waterville, seeded ninth in a field of 10 teams, scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never gave up the lead. Mohawk closed to within one run at 3-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning but the Indians tallied two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Meredith McMann tripled over the bag at third base leading off the bottom of the seventh then scored on Adrienne Ceneviva’s third hit of the day for the Mohicans.
Waterville pitcher Micaela LoConte retired the next two batters on a fly ball and a pop-up. Audrey Bunce then hit a ground ball to shortstop but the throw was dropped as the Indians attempted to force Ceneviva out at second base. Cara Briggs popped up and had the ball hit catcher Autumn Paddock and roll foul. Briggs reached base on the play and Stephanie Hurteau came to the plate as the tying run. Hurteau hit a ground ball to the right side, just beyond the reach of LoConte. Waterville second baseman Alexis Decker picked the ball up in time to throw to first and retire Hurteau on a close play to end the game.
Waterville got run-scoring hits from Paddock and Kelsey Buschor in the first inning and took advantage of three walks and an error.
Mohawk got on the board in the third inning. Singles by Ceneviva and Lexy Johnson put runners at the corners with one out. Ceneviva scored when Bunce grounded out and Briggs delivered a two-out hit to drive Johnson home.
The Mohicans had leadoff hits in the fifth and sixth innings but could not advance the runners.
Alexis Stetson, singled stole second base, took third on an overthrow and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Buschor then tripled to left-center and scored when Ally Murray grounded out.
LoConte hit a sacrifice fly and Paddock singled home run in the sixth.
Briggs had two hits in addition to Ceneviva’s three on a day when Mohawk had seven as a team.
Buschor singled, tripled, scored one run and drove in a run for Waterville. Paddock added two hits and two runs batted in while Decker scored two runs.
The Indians travel Thursday to meet top seed Sandy Creek.
