Roberts struck out nine batters and allowed six hits in a 95-pitch complete game for the Indians who were beaten by the Mohicans in their first pass trough the league.
West Canada Valley took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Josh Sternberg drew a leadoff walk and scored when Ryan Moody tripled with two outs. Moody scored the go-ahead run on a Tyler Porter single.
The Indians added a run an inning later when Brandon Roberts singled and scored on Mike Sternberg’s two-out hit.
Mohawk’s only run came before the first out of the game. Jason Congilaro led off with a triple and Dylan Bubb single.
The Mohicans, ranked 19th this week in the state Class C poll, threatened to score twice later in the game but came up empty. Mitch Werenczak tripled with two outs in the fourth inning and was stranded at third base when Thomas Roberts struck the next batter out. Bubb singled in the sixth inning and advanced to third base before Roberts got the third out on a pop fly.
Bub and Werenczak each had two hits for Mohawk. Jared Marquissee pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts.
With the loss Mohawk (10-4, 6-2 CSC-II) had its lead in the standings cut to half a game over Herkimer (10-6, 5-2 CSC-II) which had its game against Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah postponed Wednesday. The Mohicans host Herkimer Friday.
