Herkimer defeated Fort Plain 7-2 in the teams’ rubber match at Veterans Memorial Park Thursday and won the Mohawk Valley Babe Ruth League’s “B” Division championship.
John Zaleski pitched a complete game for the No. 2 seed and led Herkimer to the win against the only team to which it had lost during the regular season. Each team won at home in previous meetings and run differential had given Fort Plain the top playoff seed. Herkimer had defeated Poland 11-1 and Fort Plain beat Frankfort 10-1 in semifinals earlier Thursday.
The “B” Division championship is the second in a row for Herkimer which defeated Dolgeville 14-7 in last year’s title game in Ilion.
Herkimer took advantage of four Fort Plain errors while performing flawlessly in the field itself. The first run came in the second inning after Jesse Heroth walked Zach Harrington leading off. Harrington advanced on a wild pitch, took third base on Joe Vincent’s fly ball to right field and scored on an overthrow at third.
Another walk got Herkimer started in the third inning. Zaleski drew a free pass with one out and was thrown out trying to score on Mitchell Sherer’s double to center field. Dan Appley followed Scherer’s hit with a triple to center and followed him home when Adam Kirkpatrick’s chopper deflected off Heroth’s glove for an infield hit.
Fort Plain got on the board in the bottom of the third when Kiernan Briggs’ double drove Jacob Kennedy home from first base. Herkimer came back with three more runs in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of three walks and two errors. Kirkpatrick triple in the top of the seventh and scored the final Herkimer run when Harrington grounded to shortstop and reached base on another error.
Zaleski hit Jon Calbet leading off the bottom of the seventh and Fort Plain loaded the bases with one out on singles by Tyler Marsh and Cody Logan. One run came home when Andrew Hanifin grounded into a force play and beat the relay to first base and Zaleski fanned the next batter to end the game.
Zaleski struck out seven batters and walked four in a complete game. Scherer, Appley and Kirkpatrick each had two hits and an RBI.
Briggs doubled, tripled and drove in a run for Fort Plain.
