  • The Central New York Region of the American Red Cross opened a shelter at about noon Friday at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica for residents of Herkimer and Oneida counties who had to evacuate their homes because of major flooding across those counties.
The shelter is at the Jorgensen Center on MVCC’s campus at 1101 Sherman Drive, Utica. It will be operated by American Red Cross volunteers and staff members from the Central New York and Mohawk Valley chapters who will provide cots, blankets, food, counseling and other necessities for the residents.
States of emergencies have been declared in Ilion, Whitesboro, Kirkland and other places as heavy rains led to flooding throughout the Mohawk Valley. The Red Cross will keep the shelter open until the residents are allowed to return safely to their homes.
The Red Cross is working with Herkimer County Emergency Management to assess if additional sheltering will be required.
“Volunteers and staff members from the Central New York and Mohawk Valley chapters have combined their manpower and resources to meet the needs of the communities affected by the flooding,” said Rosie Taravella, Chief Executive Officer of the Central New York Region.
“During this unsettling time, the residents know they can turn to us for a place to stay, a bite to eat and a shoulder to lean on.”
Additional emergency shelters for displaced Herkimer and Oneida county residents have been opened in the following locations:
    • Oneida Armory, 217 Cedar St, Oneida
    • Harry Hoag School, 25 High Street, Fort Plain
Residents who require sheltering should contact the American Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter at (315) 733-4666 for more information.
