  • A fire broke out Thursday night at Little Falls Lumber, located on Southern Avenue.
The Little Falls Fire Department received the call at 11 p.m. and fought the fire into the early hours of Friday morning.
Little Falls Fire Chief Rob Parese said the fire was brought under control about two hours later. One firefighter was sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
The fire department remained on the scene throughout the course of the morning and continued to fight hotspots. Firefighters returned to service at 10 a.m. on Friday morning.
Parese said the building that caught fire was a mechanic shop/carpenter shop, but was not a total loss.
“The right side of the building was salvaged with minor smoke and water damage,” Parese said. “The house next door’s still standing. Those two trucks (parked in the lot next to the building) are still standing. That was our priority when we got here.”
According to Parese, the fire department responded to the same business prior to 11 p.m. for a smaller fire at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. Parese said the fire was brought under control in a short amount of time.
Herkimer, East Herkimer and Mohawk fire department were also called in, along with Rural/Metro Ambulance.
Authorities are uncertain of how the fires were started and plan to look further in to the cause.
LF Lumber had a series of fires in the fall of 1996 including two significant ones. Storage buildings were destroyed by one fire in September of that year and the office burned the following month. There were other smaller fires at the lumber yard and someone was eventually nabbed for arson.
