  • An event that raises money for a program to help children deal with the pressures of using drugs will take place later this summer.
The 17th annual D.A.R.E. 5K run, plus the Junior Fun Run, will occur on Aug. 18. Both runs will begin and end in front of the historic Herkimer County Jail on North Main Street in the village of Herkimer. The Junior Fun Run will commence at 8:30 a.m. The 5K run will begin at 9:15 a.m.
“This is the only fundraising event our program has,” said Herkimer Police Patrolman Steven D. Elwood, during a telephone interview on Monday. “We don’t have any funding from the state or any outside sources.”
Any runner wishing to help raise money may do so by getting sponsors.
Any runner collecting pledges totaling $100 or more will have their entry fee waived and receive a D.A.R.E awareness bracelet.
The program currently helps students in Herkimer Elementary School and St. Francis de Sales School.
Last year’s D.A.R.E. Run had about 250 runners, including the fun run.
The pre-registration fee for the adult run is $20 and the fee for the fun run is $10. Teams with four members and families with three or more runners will be $16 per person. The entry fee for the adult run goes up to $25 and the fee for the fun run goes up to $15 for registrations not received by Aug. 13. Teams and families will be $20 per person.
Refreshments and music will be provided after the run. There will also be a raffle for a television.
Awards will be given to the top three males and females in the following age groups — 12 and younger, 12-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and older.
All Fun Run participants will receive a T-shirt.
The top junior high and senior high teams will receive individual medals. There is a minimum of four runners per team and winners will be determined by the total accumulated time of first four finishers.
Organizers are looking for event sponsors. Anyone wishing to be a sponsor can contact Elwood at the Herkimer Police Department or send a donation to the D.A.R.E. program to the police department before Aug. 6. The name of their business will be printed on the back of the event T-shirts.
For further information, contact Elwood at the police station at 866-4330 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., e-mail dareherkimer@yahoo.com or visit Herkimer D.A.R.E. at Facebook. Registration forms are also available at the Herkimer D.A.R.E. Facebook page. Donations are also accepted by check.
