  • One of the more unusual fundraisers in the area is scheduled to take place again next month.
The annual Cow Plop Bingo event will take place at the German Flatts Town Park on July 7.
Spots can be purchased at the town office and Maria’s Jewelry, both in Mohawk, and at Donna’s Diner in East Herkimer. Spots are available for $5 each.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle, along with food and refreshments, including an ice cream social.
For the event, organizers will corral a cow inside a section of the park with 100 three-foot squares. Wherever the cow makes the most deposits throughout the day will be the winning square.
Friends of the German Flatts Town Park President Nelson Johnson said the group has conducted the event the last 10 years and that it has proven to be successful.
He also said hamburgers and hot dogs will be served throughout the day at the park pavilion, located next to Fort Herkimer Church on State Route 5S.
“People will come down and visit the cow. People will be in and out all day,” said Johnson.
Johnson said those competing will not know the number of the squares until after the contest so they can not pick a certain spot on the field.
According to one organizer, the event has drawn some loyal competitors.
“People go to this every year,” said German Flatts Town Supervisor Frank Spatto, who is also a member of the Friends group. “It’s just one of those ‘off-the-wall’ things.”
Spatto added, “It’s a fun way of raising money, and the money goes back into the town park.”
