The Herkimer County Community College bats broke out in Sunday’s second game and the Generals completed a sweep of their weekend series against Fulton-Montgomery Community College’s Raiders with a 17-3 win in five innings.
The Generals (14-9, 13-1 Region III) had won twice at home on Saturday — 3-2 in eight innings in the opener and 9-2 in the nightcap — then beat the Raiders again 6-1 in Sunday’s first game.
Westmoreland’s Dan Smith drove home six runs in the series final and rapped three of the team’s 15 hits. Leadoff hitter A.J. Fabrizio doubled, walked three times and scored four runs. Carlos Almonte, batting second, had four hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Fort Plain’s Brent Baker, playing his final game against his former team, had two hits and scored three runs, as did Lonnie Cohen. Jack Burns walked four times and scored three runs. Ryan Watson struck out eight Raiders and pitched a four-hitter for the win.
Fort Plain’s Dylan Pechtel, who had two hits in Sunday’s first game, hit two sacrifice flies in the second for Fulton-Montgomery.
Freshman Mike DeCarlo starred in Sunday’s opener for Herkimer. The right-hander threw a three-hitter and struck out 16 Fulton-Montgomery batters. An unearned run in the fourth inning, however, had the Raiders within one run until Herkimer scored twice in the top of the sixth and twice more in the seventh. Smith’s two-run double had given the Generals a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chris Burns drove in three runs late in the game and Watson, playing first base, had three hits and an RBI.
The most dramatic game of the series was the first. Fulton-Montgomery led 2-1 before Watson drove in the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Generals eventually won in the home half of the eighth when Chris Burns’ shallow fly ball was dropped in center field, allowing the winning run to score with two outs. Fabrizio had led off the eighth with a hit, advanced on a hit by Watson and moved to third base on a bunt. Left-hander Matt Snyder, a transfer from Virginia Tech, had notched his 11th strikeout for the second out of the inning before the error ended the game.
Rob Hardy pitched four inning of relief and earned the win.
Burns got the Generals going again in the second game with a two-run single in the first inning. He and Jason Newbigging each had three hits and Watson drove in two runs to support Kyle Garrison who struck out eight batters over six innings.
